HALLOWEEN FLOWER & FEATHER COLLAR TUTORIAL
photo Andie Redman
In this beginner friendly tutorial you will create a feather collar adorned with hydrangea blooms. It is fairly straight forward with only a little sewing needed and very few materials.
This floral fashion craft project would make the perfect statement collar for stylish Halloween parties or for brides with gothic Winter Weddings, or anyone who wants to create an accessory which is memorable and dramatic.
What you’ll need
A couple of hardy autumn/winter hydrangea heads
enough feather fringing to fit comfortably around the base of your neck like a collar (I've used around 40 cm of black coque fringing)
a small hook and eye
a needle & thread
sharp scissors
a selection of small brooch making pins around 2cm long
green floristry tape such as Stemtex.
clear nail polish

INSTRUCTIONS
STEP 1
prep the collar
Paint a very thin layer of clear nail polish on the cut ends of the fabric binding on the feather trim to prevent fraying.
Once the nail polish is dry, sew the hook to one end of the fabric binding and the eye to the other so that you can secure it around your neck.
You should now have the base of your collar.
STEP 2
prep the hydrangeas
Cut off a sprig of hydrangea from the flower head. Cut a finger length piece of floristry tape.
Open up the brooch so the sharp pin is out of the way. Hold the stem of the hydrangea sprig parallel along the top of the brooch pin.
Attach them together by wrapping with the floristry tape, making sure the tape sticks to itself.
Repeat this with at least 5 more pins.

STEP 3
assemble the collar
Pin the first hydrangea brooch to one end of the feather trim's fabric binding, on the side that will be facing out away from the neck/throat.
Repeat by pinning the rest of the hydrangea all around the collar.
Try to ‘fluff’ out the hydrangea flowers to hide all the brooch pins.
